It was 1973.  I was 25 years old at the time.  I remember the morning well.  I had just gotten out of the shower, and I was standing bare-chested in front of the bathroom mirror as I was about to shave.  I looked in admiration at my healthy, fit and youthful body.  And then, something struck me.  An idea.  An inspiration.  A promise.  All of these might be adequate ways of describing what went through my mind in that moment.  I then, in that moment, made a promise to myself.  I promised that I would never let an old man move into my body.

At the time, I didn’t truly realize the profound significance of that promise, but it is a commitment that I have kept to this day.  The result?  I am enjoying an amazing, healthy, youthful and abundant life today at 62 years young.  With the right attitude, and having taken proper care of myself through right eating and correct physical exercise (weight training), I look and feel almost as I did when I was 25 years old, that is, my weight and measurements are the same, and there is hardly a wrinkle on my face.  Accident?  Good fortune?  Or just good genes?  I don’t think so.

People Age Differently Even Through Two People May Have Been Born In Exactly the Same Year and On the Same Day

People do not age the same.  If you doubt this, then you have not been very observant of life and the people in it.  There is a key concept or core belief on which hinges the destiny of your ongoing youth and vitality – or lack of it.  There is a question that I would ask you.  And this is the question.  At what age do you become “old”? Now, think about it a moment before you answer.

It is fascinating for me to hear the responses to this question by people.  I hear:  50 years old.  60 years old.  70 years old.  80 years old.  I have even heard someone say at 40 years because this is the age when one is then “over-the-hill”.  Well, all of them are right – and all of them are wrong, at the same time.

Whatever the age that you personally believe is the age to become old is the age to become old for you.   “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” If you are 40 years old, and if you make certain statements such as “When I get old at 60…” you are setting yourself up for twenty years of negative programming to become old as soon as you reach 60!

And What Exactly is “Old”?  What Does “Old” Really Mean?

When your really think about it, the true unspoken meaning of “old” is really “unable”.  To be old, means to be “unable”.  So once you program yourself to become “old”, at that age, whatever age number you have decided, you begin to look “old”, feel “old”  and act “old”.  This is how it really works.

If You Expect To Become “Old”, You Will Age Prematurely

Why expect to become “old” at all?  Why not accept youth and health as who you really are?  If you no longer believe that a certain age equals “old”, and if you also take care of your health, nutritionally speaking and with the right type of exercise (with weights), then that “old” man or that “old” woman is no longer able to move into your body.

I have no way of knowing where you are at present on the time and age continuum, but God-willing, you will sooner or later make it to your 80th year.  I could have chosen 70 or even 90, but 80 plus seems like a good target decade to focus on.  Have you thought at all about how you will be eating and how you will be exercising at this stage?  You know very few people even consider these two questions – yet they should.  If you know what I know, and if you care about your body and quality-of-life, like I do, you will be doing certain things, health-wise, in a certain way every day.

First of All Start Your Health and Exercise Routine Now!

I was very lucky in that I started my regimen of healthy eating and working out with weights at the tender age of 57.  (I am still only a youthful 62 at present.)  I know of several physical fitness super stars who started weight training at 70 and some beyond that.  Bottom line – wherever you are, it’s never too late to start.  In short, start now.

How You Would Be Eating At 80 plus

1. You Would Be Eating Low Fat, High Fiber Foods –  You would be eating 5 small, healthy meals of about 500 to 600 calories every couple of hours.  You would broil your chicken or fish, and you would drastically cut down your consumption of red meats.

2. You Would Drink Half of Your Body Weight in Water Per Day – As we age, our body tends to hold less and less water, therefore you would need to conscientiously hydrate your body to maintain high levels of energy.

3. The Foods That You Would Eat Would Include “Super-Fruit”:

• Acai Berries

• Pomegranates

• Cranberries

• Blueberries

4. The “Super-Beverages” That You Would Drink Would Include:

• Green Tea

• Ginseng Tea

• Probiotic “Green” Drinks

5. The Supplements That You Would Take Would Include:

• A Mega-Vitamin Pack (with meals)

• A Mega-Mineral Pack (with meals)

• Flaxseed Oil or Omega Fish Oil

• Saw Palmetto Capsules (for prostate health if happen to be a man)

How You Would Be Exercising At 80 plus

1. You Would Take 15 Minutes to Stretch Before Any Strenuous Exercise –  Stretching before strenuous exercise is what everyone, young and older should practice.  The need to warm up the muscles and joints by stretching becomes even more imperative after age 40.

2. You Would Be Exercising With Barbells and Dumbbells Four Times A Week –  The core of your exercise routine would consist of progressive weight resistance exercises.  You would continue to strengthen your muscles, bones and joints.  You would use comfortable poundage, but you would not be worried about how heavy you used to lift.

3. You Would Do Aerobic Activity Such As Jogging or Cycling – On the days that you are not lifting weights, you would practice cardiovascular exercises for at least 20 or 30 minutes per day to keep your heart and circulatory system strong.

How Much Sleep Would You Get At 80 plus

You Would Get Eight Good Hours of Sleep Each Night – Rest and recuperation is essential at this stage of the game.  You would need to sleep well to wake up refreshed.

How Often Would You Visit Your Doctor At 80 plus

You Would See Your Doctor for Regular Physical Check Ups Every 6 Months – Unless you have a particular medical condition that requires more frequent visits, you should see your physician for a physical check up at least twice a year.

What Would Your Life Philosophy Be At 80 plus

You Would Take Better Care of Your Soul – What I am talking about here is the practice of being more grateful – more grateful for life, more grateful for having made it this far, and grateful for every new day of life.  At this stage – as nowevery day must count, and every day must be lived to the fullest.  One day, we’re all going to run out of days – that’s for sure.  It could be today – it could be tomorrow.  Why chance it – live and love this day to its fullest. Now, until that day does comes, if you’ve played your cards right, you will have lived strong, erect, handsome, healthy and happy. And that last grateful expiration of your breath will be given – with a smile – of a life well lived.

Charles Prosper

Click on the play button.  You will be amazed at what you see.

Sophia Loren is 74. Here she is making a cameo appearance at the 2009 Oscar Awards Presentation.  And – wow! She is still stunning and beautiful past seventy. Just follow this video clip for a few more seconds, and you will meet, Ernestine Shepherd, the “World’s Oldest Female Bodybuilder” as documented by the 2010 Guinness Book of World Records who is also stunning and beautiful at 74.   However, Ernestine has a distinct advantage over Sophia Loren. Ernestine, who is also a “natural beauty”, no matter how long she ages has to age slower and better than my idol Sophia of so many years. Why? Because Ernestine is progressively and scientifically becoming younger as she is becoming older.

The Paradox of Becoming Younger as You Are Growing Older

What I mean by this paradox is that progressive weight resistance exercise along with small-meals frequently eaten as clean and healthy low-fat, high fiber foods will constantly improve the body overall. Women over 50 have to be aware and cognizant of the inevitable loss of bone density which leads to a condition of brittle bones also known as osteoporosis. With weight training, the bones will stay strong and dense – just like a person 10 or 20 years younger. Once a woman passes 50 or 60, and most certainly 70, their skeletal frame will become weaker and more fragile in the absence of weight training.

Weight Training Improves the Elasticity of Your Skin as You Age More Gracefully

Forget about face-lifts and botox injections to remove facial wrinkles. There is an easier and more natural way to achieve not only the same but even better results. Weight training gives more elasticity to the skin, and you tend not to wrinkle the same as if you were not training with barbells and dumbbells. Your skin is given a greater glow of youthful appearance.

You Can Have A Hot Bikini Body At 50, 60 or 70 – I’m Not Kidding!

To keep your hot bikini body, the muscles must be kept from sagging; they must be kept supple, firm and strong. Weight training can do this for you. Muscles are what gives a woman her curves. I have seen women who weight train regularly in their 50′s, 60′s and 70′s, and all of them who are committed and have been at it for at least a year or so, look great in bikinis!

Bottom Line: Natural beauty or not, to look your best – no matter what your age – you must eat right and commit yourself to a permanent lifestyle of correct eating and weight resistance exercises using barbells and dumbbells.

Please leave me your comment.

Ernestine Shepherd – 74-Year Old Fitness Legend Doing Push Ups

Okay, you just turned 40, and you are freaking out how certain body parts are getting out of shape.  There could be many areas of improvement, but one that gives many women cause for discontent is how their underarm muscles become flabby, gently waving back and forth whenever they point their arms outward.  This is the  area on the underside of the upper arm, opposite the biceps muscles which is called the triceps.  Though jogging may be great to lose weight overall, it does absolutely nothing to shape and sculpt other parts of the body.  This is why progressive weight resistance with the regular use of barbells and dumbbells is so important for women.  But let us look at just this one problem area for some – the underarm triceps muscles that have grown saggy and weak.

Push Ups to the Rescue

One of the best and basic exercises that is accessible, inexpensive and has been around forever is the floor push up.  The beauty of this exercise is that when you combine it with aerobic activity such as jogging or cycling, you can develop a  very firm and sculpted body.

The Benefits of the Push Up

Benefit Number 1 Push Ups Are an A-1 Chest (Pectoral Muscle) Developer – Perky breasts?  Why not.  The muscles (pectorals) under the soft female breast tissue lift and give them their proud, pouty, perky look.

Benefit Number 2 Push Ups Develop The Shoulder (Frontal Deltoid) Muscles – Throw away those foam shoulder pads that come with the stylish dresses that give your shoulders that broad sexy look and let the beauty and grace of your own shoulders frame your body.

Benefit Number 3 Push Ups Develop and Make Firm the Triceps Muscle – What caused me to write this article in the first place was the fact that the push up is the cure to the under the arm muscle flab that has grown flaccid from lack of exercise.

How To Do Push Ups

Click on start button to see the proper technique for the push up.

Aside from learning the specific push up technique of getting on the floor with your hands flat shoulder-width apart, holding your torso perfectly straight, and lowering  your chest barely to the floor and then pushing yourself up, the overall idea is to start slow – at your own pace and strength level.  If you can only do one or two push ups to start, that’s okay.  Heck!  If you can only do one or two half push ups, that’s okay too.  Do them every other day, and try to add one more every few days or so or as soon as you can comfortably do more.  Once you can do 12 non-stop push ups in good form,  make it your goal to be able to rest a minute after doing 12 repetitions – and then do another set of 12 reps.  Rest finally, for another minute after that second set, and then do a final set of 12 repetitions.  At the stage of being able to do 3 sets of 12 reps …well…just look at yourself in the mirror.  You will smile with satisfaction, and you will be glad to have accomplished what you have.

I was watching on the internet a 10-minute talk by a popular Catholic nun, a Mother Angelica, on the subject of staying and living in the present moment, a subject on which I am totally fascinated and in agreement.  However, there was something she said that was a little disturbing, well at least for me from my perspective and with my knowledge and lifestyle of continued ongoing improvement of personal health.  She said something to the effect, “Well, at one time you could easily walk up the stairs – now you can’t.  So what.  You’re old now.  Get over it.”  The audience laughs.

It Is Not Normal To Get Old – We Just Accept It As Normal

It is not normal to grow old.  Most people let it happen.  It is only “statistically normal” in the sense that it is a commonplace acceptance – that we are destined to one day be old and decrypted if we live beyond a certain age such as 80 or so.

What Is “Old”?

Have you ever asked yourself what is “old”?  Or at what age do you become “old”?  I have had people tell me, 70, 60 – even 50!!  Unbelievable.  If you really think and understand the underlying meaning of “old”, it is a synonym for “unable”.  “Old” is the age at which you decide to let yourself deteriorate and thus allow yourself to become “older” and “older”.

You Must Take Charge of the Age-Reversal Process (In 3 Steps)

First – You must know that it is possible to create age-reversal through progressive weight resistance, using barbells and dumbbells along with a healthy diet of clean-eating of low-fat, high fiber foods.

Second – You must have the desire, the intention and the commitment to begin and follow through with this new regimen for life as a regular part of your daily routine – just as you would brush your teeth, sleep or bath which are ongoing daily habits of your life.

Third – You must know that the body is perfectly capable of rejuvenating itself if you ask it to do this for you.  I started weight training and clean eating at 57.  I am now 62, and I have the same body and strength that I did when I was 25 years old.  Now you decide what’s possible.  How do you want to look and feel with every passing year?  If you truly decide and commit, you can have a never-ending, ever-improving youth and health experience as a realistic and achievable part of the rest of your life.

The Dumbbell Side Lateral Raises

Barring any unavoidable and unexpected disease such as Alteimer’s or Parkinson’s, most people allow their bodies to physically deteriorate and become what most people would call “old” and decrypted.  (You know what I’m talking about – the image of the little gray-haired lady or man, bent over, thin, emaciated, with wrinkly and hanging skin and muscles, pushing a walker or treading along slowly and carefully by using a walking cane for forward locomotion.)  This same person could be likened as well to someone who has spent his or her entire life working and earning a living, and who after 40 or more years in the work force, has done nothing to prepare him or herself for the later years by  saving or investing their money along the way.  Thus they arrive at what should be the “golden years” but arrive instead broke and dependent upon family, friends and/or social institutions for survival, sustenance and welfare.  These are called our “elderly”.

You Must Be A Visionary When It Comes To Your Body and Your Life

What do I mean by this?  Well, just as it says in the Good Book “Where there is no vision, the people perish”, you must have enough vision, though some would even call this “common sense”, to see into the future and know that you must prepare for both the possibility of a reduction in your earning power if your only means to earn has been through working at a 9 to 5 job , and you must have the vision to prepare for a natural decline in your physical prowess as well usually after the age of 50 by starting to save your health, that is, save yourself from certain physical deterioration and decline by initiating asap, as in right now, a daily and conscientious program of clean, nutritious eating and a regimen of exercise via progressive weight resistance.  Notice I didn’t say by just jogging, or doing yoga, or practicing pilates.  I said progressive weight resistance which means the regular, gradual, systematic, guided and scientific use of barbells and dumbbells to strengthen, sculpt, shape, fortify and to forever rejuvenate your body.

Planning Is The Key

Let me say this.  If you carefully save, invest and plan for your later years when you stop working a 9 to 5, you should never have to retire broke, dependent or destitute, if you do it properly and if you start right now if you have not already done so.  Likewise, you will never have to end up “old” as most people stereotypically believe themselves to one day have to become if you also start now if you haven’t already done so into a committed, dedicated and passionate program of correct eating and progressive weight resistance to stop the aging process, turn back the hands of time and to add, literally, years and years of quality health and vibrancy to the rest of your life.

The Message of This Article

Save your money and save your life through timely investing and through healthy eating and exercise via progressive weight resistance.

Let me hear from you.  Please leave your comments.

I am 61 years young. That’ s how I see myself. You might want to call me “old”, but that’s your perception. I personally will never – ever – call myself old, not even in joking. And you will learn why when you have finished reading this blog post. Look at my profile photo. Yeah. Go ahead. Look. It was taken on my 61st birthday. Do I look “old” to you? I will bet that you’re saying, “Hell no!” And, you want to know something? I look, feel, and am younger today than I was on my last birthday. I am stronger and more virile than the average 40-year old, and I’m getter younger and stronger each year.

Well, there is a reason for everything under the sun, and my never-ending youth is no accident. It is indeed by design. Exercise and nutrition play a great part, but I say to you that attitude plays an even greater part. How you “think” of yourself will determine how fast or how slow you age. I will give you in this article the keys to the kingdom for the fountain of youth. Get ready, for in few short moments, you will learn the definitive secrets to turning back the hands of time for good.

How Attitude Ages You – The 3 Things to Avoid and the 3 Things to Do

The 3 Things to Avoid to Become Younger and Younger Instead of Older and Older

Thing to Avoid #1 – Never Call Yourself “Old”- Ever – How you think of yourself and what self-image you hold of yourself will age you faster than anything that you can imagine. Your subconscious mind cannot take a joke. Chronologically, there is nothing that you can do to stop clock time and the years from advancing. But there is a difference between chronological age and physiological age. The two are mutually exclusive. If you look, feel and act 20 years younger than your chronological age, who the hell cares how many candles there are on some dumb birthday cake. When I made 25, I remember well, I looked at myself in the mirror, and I said to myself, “I will never let an ‘old’ man move inside of this body.” And to date, I have kept my promise to myself. Never use nor say such terms as “When I get old and decrypted…” or “I’m getting old…” These types of statements are anathema to the preservation of your physiological youth.

Thing To Avoid #2 – Avoid Letting Other People Call You “Old” – Of course you can’t control what people say, in jest or otherwise, but an easy way to avoid people calling you old, even though they are looking at how youthful you are is to simply not give out your age. My typical answer to “Prosper, how old are you?” is “I’m ageless.” Once I give out my chronological age, with most people, their reaction and their focus is on the number of times that the Earth has revolved around the Sun (since I have been on it) rather than how young I look.

Thing To Avoid #3Avoid “Old” People – Now, wait a minute! Before you start calling me an “age bigot”. When I use the O-word, that is, “old”, I use “old” as defined by attitude not as defined by years. My best friend, happens to be 84 years of age. And trust me, there is nothing “old” about Melvin. He works out with weights, plays tennis with a vengeance, and has a rock-hard six-pack abs (as in abdominal muscles).

The 3 Things to Do to Become Younger and Younger Instead of Older and Older

Thing To Do #1Do Believe That Youth is At Any Age – It is no longer how old you are but how old you want to be. Healthy diet, progressive weight resistance, that is, exercise with barbells and dumbbells along with the right attitude toward the aging process is the key to everlasting youth.

Thing To Do #2 - Know That It’s Never Too Late To Start Exercising and Eating Properly – Be you 40, 50, 60, 70 or more, it is never late to start an exercise routine (of progressive weight resistance) and proper eating. Just add attitude, and you are ready for youth anew.

Thing To Do #3Meet And Befriend Youthful and Super-Fit Seniors – To achieve this, you might have to change your environment and social circle a bit. Join a professional gym, and I will guarantee that you will find there, someone who is over 50, 60 or 70 who is totally awesome! These are the types of people who need to surround you. I guarantee you that with their beautiful bodies no matter how advanced in years, you will find that they have the right attitude as well.

If you think that after 50, 60, or 70 that it is all over sexually, then my friend, think again. In this article, you will learn that there are certain types of exercise that can increase sexual libido by over 300%. No kidding! Read on and discover how easy it is to enjoy and better and richer sex life right now – no matter at what stage of the age game you are in.

The Key Is In Doing Barbell and Dumbbell Exercises

Progressive weight resistance is the key to sexual “shangri-la”. Exercise is indeed the key to better health, energy and vigor, but all exercise types are not the same. Jogging will improve your endurance and cardiovascular stamina (very good for having vigorous sex of course), and yoga will increase your flexibility and ability to get into exotic bodily positions (just in case you have just put down a recent copy of the Kama Sutra). Notwithstanding the benefits of practically any type of regular exercise for improved health, the secret lies in the increasing of testosterone.

The Research of Dr. Ronald Bahr and How Testosterone Level Increases

Scientific research carried out by Dr. Ronald Bahr of Oslo, Norway showed that after 1 hour of vigorous weight training, testosterone can increase by as much as 300% and will last up to 2 hours after you’re finished! And if your testosterone level can increase 3 times more than normal, you know what that means! Party time with your clothes off!

Increase Your Testosterone – Increase Your Sex Drive – This is the Secret!

Testosterone is the hormone responsible for sex drive, and is produced less as we reach 50 and radically declines after 60, however learning to eat healthfully and how to exercise using barbells and dumbbells can transform your body and energy level in as little as 12 weeks.

I want to make something very clear. In fact, I want to make two important points: One – you are never too old to start exercising and taking care of your body, and two – the most positive changes in your health and the age-reversal process happens when you exercise with progressive weight resistance, that is, with barbells and dumbbells as your primary means of exercise. I have seen great results with a program of just jogging. With stair-walking and/or bicycling, a lot can be said in its favor, but I have seen PROFOUND results and changes in the health, strength and renewed youth of individuals in their, 50′s, 60′s and 70′s when the individual adapts the use of barbells and dumbbells as their primary program of fitness. In this article, you will learn and discover that it is never too late, and you are never ever too old to start and continue body building for the rest of your life.

The 4 Reasons Why You’re Never Too Old To Start Exercising with Weights

Reason # 1People Have Started Body Building in the Seventies and Have Continued Into Their 80′s – I personally know of many people who have who were late bloomers, body building speaking, in their 50′s and 60′s and have continued to date still vigorously working out in their 80′s. Heck! I started when I was 57, and I am in better shape than most 30-year olds. What’s your excuse?

Reason #2As Long As You Start Gradually, You Will Get Stronger – Gradualness is the secret. You only need to start with weights that YOU can comfortably handle, and I promise you, that your body will get stronger and stronger, more and more supple, and more and more youthful.

Reason #3You Really Don’t Have A Choice – If You Don’t Use It You WILL Lose It – This is to say that before 30, youth is God’s gift to you. After 30, youth is your gift to yourself. After 40 – without exercise – and proper nutrition, it is all downhill from there. The good news is that you can reverse the aging process at any time.

Reason #4Life Always Seeks To Improve Itself – I don’t know what is your religious or life- philosophy belief, but my experience is that life always seeks to improve itself if given the means and the way to do so. This is the underlying reason why “practice makes perfect.” (Well, strictly speaking, I don’t believe that practice makes perfect, but practice most certainly makes improvement, and if we can constantly improve ourselves, perfection becomes closer and closer – even though we will never attain it while on this Earth.

Before 30, youth is God’s gift to you. And after 30, youth is your gift to yourself. This thought came to me one day, and I understood, truly understood the why of exercise. Then, a little beyond this thought, came to me the idea that, metaphorically speaking, our bodies, as far as aging is concerned, are either a swamp or flowing waters. In this article, you will hopefully see that it is no longer a question of how old you are…but how old you want to be. A new future for you, if you wish, is only an article’s reading away. Read on.

Your Body As A Swamp

I want you to think about something for a moment. I want you to think of a swamp. Okay. Got that image in your mind? Now, I want you to think of flowing mountain spring waters. Got that image in mind? Could you describe the differences in the two? Let us first take the swamp. A swamp is characterized by stagnation, filth and putrefaction. Not all organisms are turned off by the idea of living in the habitat of a swamp. Fungi and moss love it there – so do frogs, snakes and lizards – and flies. It smells bad, and it is slimy to walk through.

Your Body As Flowing Spring Waters

Now, what are the characteristics of flowing mountain spring waters? For one, it’s clean enough to drink, but the essence and the secret of its purity lies in the fact that it flows. It moves and circulates, and in a way, keeps itself clean from the accumulation of filth and sediment.

As You Age, Inactivity Turns Your Body Into The Swamp

Using this as a metaphor of the difference of one who exercises and one who doesn’t, we can see the parallel and what essentially happens to us as we age and become sedentary, stagnate and deteriorating through inactivity. Just like the sedentary swamp, we begin to accumulate all of the filth, sediment and putrefaction of not using our bodies.

Exercise, With Progressive Weight Resistance, Turns Back The Clock and Returns Your Youth Back To You

Now, what would happen to the swamp that begins to flow? What would happen to the waters that would begin to move and circulate through the rocks and down the mountain edges? Yes, all of the sediment and filth would begin to purify itself from the waters. Beginning and continuing with regular physical exercise, no matter at what stage of your life, will in turn, reverse the physiological deterioration of the aging process. No I must emphasize right here, that when I speak of proper youth-rejuvenating exercise, I am unequivocally speaking of progressive weight resistance using barbells and dumbbells on a regular basis. Just jogging won’t cut it. Calisthenics – still not enough. Pilates? Don’t make me laugh. Your muscles, joints, bones and tendons need what proper weight resistance has to offer to every part of your body. With this type of exercise and proper eating – the living waters of your blood, heart and circulatory system, begin to rejuvenate your body, giving it new life and new energy.

Exercise, With Progressive Weight Resistance, Must Become Your New Youth Lifestyle

Beginning to exercise must be taken and understood to be the beginning of a new lifestyle. You are not doing this to get somewhere – then stop. No more do you bathe today – to become clean enough to stop bathing for the rest of your life. There are undeniable daily activities that must be done for the rest of our lives. Some of them are more obvious like eating, sleeping, bathing. I say that exercising also belongs on this list, that is, if you want to live longer, feel stronger and enjoy more of your life. Why not give yourself a chance to experience more of life? I encourage you to begin and take that first step, and I stand up and applaud you for honoring your body, for to do this is to honor the temple of your spirit.

Yours in health,
